
Affiliate Consultant (Community Health and Qualitative Research)
Masila Michael Syengo is a seasoned community health and research specialist with over 18 years of experience leading the design, delivery, and evaluation of health programs in Kenya and the wider East Africa region. He holds a Master's degree in Counselling Psychology from the University of Manchester and is pursuing a PhD in Community Health Sciences at the Great Lakes University of Kisumu. Masila has extensive expertise in sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR), HIV/AIDS, gender-based violence (GBV), and health systems strengthening, with a focus on community engagement and patient-centered approaches. He is highly skilled in qualitative research methodologies, human-centered design, and participatory evaluation, and is proficient in tools such as NVivo, Dedoose, and Atlas.ti.
He has consulted for leading organizations, including KASHA Kenya & Rwanda, Aga Khan Foundation (AKF), Population Services Kenya (PSK), Population Council, Ipas, APHIAplus, and Innovations for Poverty Action (IPA), where he has designed and led large-scale evaluations, formative assessments, and gender-focused studies.
His recent work includes overseeing multi-county SRHR and GBV evaluations for PSI/PSK, and with KASHA designing digital health user-centered assessments in Kenya and Rwanda, and contributing to HIV and key populations research for UNAIDS and the National Syndemic Diseases Control Council. Mr. Masila has co-authored scientific papers and presented research findings at the national and international forums. At Karl Jays, he contributes deep expertise in community health systems, qualitative research leadership, and strategic partnerships that strengthen impact across programs.
